Theory Training

Here at Kestrel we provide our own unique method of Theory Training, using a combination of self study, lecturing and computer based practice exams. Students study at their own pace and are encouraged to absorb as much information as they can to make the practical aspects of their flying easier.

Mangalore Airport now has its very own ASL theory testing centre, so students living on site can study for their exams and do the test without having to travel anywhere. Part time students can also use the facility.

The Commercial Helicopter Course consists of the following subjects:

Human Factors (Factors affecting a pilot’s performance)

Aircraft General Knowledge (Fuel systems, Electrical systems, Instrument systems, Engines)

Aerodynamics (Helicopter)

Airlaw (Helicopter)

Meteorology (Aviation weather)

Navigation

Operational Performance and Planning

The Private Pilot Helicopter Exam also contains all of the above listed subjects. The knowledge requirement is not as high as the commercial course and there is only one exam which lasts for three hours.

If converting from a Private Pilot Fixed Wing licence to a Commercial Helicopter licence the student must pass all seven commercial theory exams.

If converting from a Commercial Pilot Fixed Wing licence to a Commercial Helicopter licence the student will need to pass the following commercial theory exams:
